Banging away regardless...
Imagine a professional representative body introduced without consultation, forcing everyone to pay AU$193 + ongoing AU$70 year just to file away paper relating to degrees and police clearances (repeating what is done by HR in every school anyway).When I called WACOT in 2006 they told me I could suspend my "membership" (forced taxation actually) while I was overseas.
Guess what? They lied! Now I have to apply all over again to teach in a state where I was already teaching!!

"Another issue that has really undermined the morale of the teaching fraternity over the last three years has been the Western Australian College of Teaching. In isolation, the issues with WACOT probably would not be sufficient to alienate teachers, but they are almost like the straw that broke the camel’s back. Teachers acknowledge the potential benefits of WACOT, but they do not see any tangible rewards after three years. They really do not. Teachers are paying their $70 a year registration fee and they feel they are not getting anything in return."

"WACOT has, if anything, failed a little more conspicuously in representing teachers’ interests than the union. It may well have had something useful to say about OBE but it doesn’t seem to be mentioned in my files. Indeed, it is far from clear what it actually does in this sort of area.
I have heard its rare defenders compare WACOT to bodies such as the AMA and other national professional institutions; but those institutions are, apart from any more obvious difference, genuinely independent professional bodies, equally at arm’s length from either party, and fearless in promoting members’ interests on any issue.
It’s worth pointing out that you can still be a practising physician and not be a member of the AMA — professional registration is a quite separate matter. WACOT, on the other hand, puts one in mind of the way that professional organisations in places like Soviet Russia used to be set up by government decree."
God save us from WACOT - what a pack of idiots, and what a travesty given the shortage of teachers! If your kid doesn't have a qualified teacher in front of them - here is one reason why.
